#9 Matthias Kyburz’s Countdown to the NY Marathon – Tapering

9 days left until the start of the New York Marathon!
We’re thrilled to follow Matthias in these final days leading up to the New York Marathon! The excitement is building — can he take running.COACH into the top 10 on the world’s biggest marathon stage?

Today, the focus is on a crucial phase for every marathoner: “tapering” – the fine balance between rest and readiness.

This time, Matthias is trying something new. “The tapering starts 10 days before the marathon,” he explains. “That means I’m pushing a bit closer to the limit compared to my last three marathons, where I started tapering 14 days out. In terms of total volume, the last two weeks don’t change much — simply put, I’ll do one more hard session in the penultimate week.”

The approach is inspired by insights from his coach, Viktor Röthlin, who is in regular exchange with some of the world’s most successful marathon coaches. “One key takeaway from those discussions was that many top marathoners push harder into their taper than I’ve done before,” says Kyburz. “We see this as the right moment to experiment a bit — to challenge our usual routine, fully aware of both the risks and the potential rewards.”
