#4 Matthias Kyburz’s Countdown to the NY Marathon – nutrition

4 days left until the start of the New York Marathon!
We’re thrilled to follow Matthias in these final days leading up to the New York Marathon! The excitement is building — can he take running.COACH into the top 10 on the world’s biggest marathon stage?

Today, we’re looking at a key factor that can make or break any marathon performance: race-day nutrition.

Fueling for 42.195 km

For Matthias Kyburz, the marathon day starts early — and with a well-rehearsed plan. “I eat my breakfast about four hours before the start,” he explains. “It has to be as easy to digest as possible — usually white bread with honey and a carbohydrate drink.”

About two hours before the start, he tops up his energy stores again. “I’ll eat a bit more white bread, and then about an hour before the race, I’ll have an energy bar.”

Once the race begins, precise fueling becomes essential. “As an elite athlete, I’m lucky to have my personal drink bottles every five kilometres,” says Kyburz. “That means I take in about 200 ml of my carbohydrate drink every 15 minutes. I use Winforce CHO MAXX, which provides me with all the energy I need for the race.”
